When You Need an Emergency Supply of Your Medication and Can’t Reach Your Prescriber, Pearl Chemist Group Can Help.

It can be a distressing feeling reaching for your medications only to discover you’ve run out. Subject to certain conditions, our pharmacists can provide you with an emergency prescription to get you the medications you urgently need. PCG can also help if you have a prescription but your pharmacy is closed or if you’re visiting the local area and forgot to bring your medication with you.

How Does the Emergency Supply Service Work?

For PCG to issue you an urgent prescription, you must have been previously prescribed the medication before by a doctor, dentist, independent nurse prescriber, independent optometrist prescriber, or any other healthcare professional with the UK prescribing authority.

If your medication meets these requirements, you’ll then need to see one of our pharmacists face-to-face so that they can:

Check for evidence that you have been prescribed the medicine before from a trusted source.

Determine the most appropriate dose.

Agree you need the medicine immediately.

How Much of My Medication Can PCG Prescribe?

If your emergency supply request is approved, PCG pharmacists may be able to prescribe up 30 days worth of treatment. However, some medications can only be prescribed in limited amounts:

Insulin, Ointment, Creams, or Asthma Inhalers: The smallest pack size will be prescribed. Contraceptive Pill: A full treatment cycle.
Liquid Oral Antibiotics: The smallest quantity to finish a full course of treatment. Permitted Controlled Drugs: Up to 5 days of treatment.

If You Do Not Have a Prescription

If you don’t have a prescription or don’t have one with you, you may still be able to get an emergency supply. Bring in a copy of your old prescription or the medicine’s packaging if you have it. Please contact us if you aren’t able to provide any proof of your medicine as we still may be able to help.

Is This Covered by the NHS?

Emergency supplies of medications are not covered by the NHS so there will be a charge, even if you don’t normally pay for your prescriptions. The exact cost will depend on the medication being prescribed and the pharmacy’s policies.

Can I Get an Emergency Prescription as a Visitor to the UK?

Yes, as long as your prescription meets certain criteria. For a UK pharmacist to dispense your medication, the medication must have been originally prescribed to you by a doctor or dentist in a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) or from Switzerland. Prescriptions from other healthcare professionals and nurses abroad are not valid.

What if I don’t have a prescription?

If you run out of prescription medicine and do not have a prescription with you, you can get an emergency supply from a pharmacy without a prescription.

Take an old prescription or the medicine's packaging with you, if you have it.

You'll be assessed by the pharmacist to find out:
