What is a PCR test?

The PCR, or Polymerase Chain Reaction, test is an accurate and reliable test for detecting whether a person is currently infected with Covid-19. It’s the test that is used to record the number of cases in the UK.

During a PCR test, a healthcare professional will use a long flexible stick with a cotton bud swab at the end to collect a nasal or nasopharyngeal sample. This sample is then tested for the presence of the genetic material of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

Unlike Rapid Antigen tests, you don’t need to have a high viral count for the test to determine if you have Covid-19 or not. The test is sensitive enough that in some cases it can detect trace amounts of the genetic material, indicating a previous Covid-19 infection within the prior 90 days. Also unlike Rapid Antigen tests, you generally don’t need to worry about receiving a false negative test result.
